Idris Elba to present the life in South Africa after the death of Nelson Mandela in a musical.
Tree will feature music, dance and film, all to premiere at the Manchester International Festival next year.
According to Elba, himself and his long time friend Kwei-Armah used his album Mi Mandela as a starting point.
“We’ve both experienced personal moments of healing connected with the country and we’re starting to explore that together.
Meanwhile, Idris Elba played Nelson Mandela in the movie Long Walk To Freedom.
He has however co-created a show called Tree with Kwame Kwei-Armah, the artistic director of London’s Young Vic.
Performances by Yoko Ono and grime artist Skepta have also been announced for the festival.
He shared the news on Instagram with the caption:
It’s happening people!
We are bringing Tree to the stage at @mifestival in 2019 with Kwame Kwei-Armah.
My vision and our joint ambition to work together to produce this piece started with the Mi Mandela album and inspiration from South Africa.
