Corona Virus has hit the world and there are different steps and measures taken to contain and suppress the virus. We may wonder why it is being referred to as COVID-19. It is simple as this, CO is for Corona, VI is for virus and D for disease, while 19 is for the year that the outbreak was first identified; 31 December 2019 in the capital of China’s Hubei province, Wuhan.
There has been, a lot of controversy over reference for the virus. In order not to ignite some kind of racism or racial prejudice, names such as the ‘chinese virus’ ,’ wuhan virus’ especially controversial and abusive terms sucks as ‘Kung flu’ , ‘wuflu’. . As of today, there is still no cure for COVID-19 but chloroquine previously used to treat malaria seem to be a positive preliminary result for the treatment, yet noting that more than a dose of one gram is highly dangerous and could be lethal.
The common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough and shortness of breath. There are other symptoms such as muscle pain, sputum production, diarrhea, sore throat, loss of smell and abdominal pain. COVID-19 can even progress to pneumonia and multi-organ failure.
The virus is quite a scarce being a pandemic and for the fact that it might not show symptom in it host. The incubation period is typically 5-6 days and may range between 2-14 days. The virus is not airborne because it is heavy but lands on surfaces and can last for about 72 hours. Thus, people can be contaminated by touching such surface and then their face. The virus mainly spread during close contact and via respiratory droplets produced when people cough or sneeze.
For this reason, practical preventive measures are to be adhered to such as frequent hand washing par advent one has made contact with a contaminated surface, keeping unwashed hand away from the face just in case one has made hand or fingers make contact with a contaminated surface, maintain social or physical distancing and covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or inner elbow. It is most contagious when the symptoms are symptomatic but may spread before symptoms appears.
COVID-19 has brought the world to it knees and virtually every nation of the world has somehow shutdown. There is a good side of the virus in that mother nature is reportedly healing herself in this perilous time that man can barely engage in chemical combusting activities white a plague ravages the people. Reports has it that the ozone layer is healing as there are fewer or no planes at all to foul the airspace.
For Africa, it will further expose our vulnerability and ignorance as a people. African christains have demonise COVID-19 which is just a virus. In moment of political, economic and social crises, we turn to God attributing our problems as spiritual consequences reflecting in the real world. This is not to say religion do not play an important role in surviving these times. I absolutely agree on that because faith is therapeutic, it is optimism immeasurable and the ray of hope in the toughest time. However, truth and fact is the perfect complement to faith. It is a no brainer that only Research and Development in science and medicine that would ease this ‘punishment of God’. Even the 3 world religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) supports self isolation and quarantine.
C ‘mon people, we shouldn’t act like we are in the dark ages, science and religion doesn’t have to conflict. We are 2020 years after the death of Christ, for Christ’s sake, can we be truthful to ourselves… but I get it. This is the perfect time to say ‘it is the system’. Now think about it if religion and science don’t have tussle and can actually accommodate. The outcome might be unprecedented. You know, people fear what they don’t know. You can still pray against the demon and yet, observe preventive measures. I don’t think it is contradicting and this isn’t the case.
The issue here underlines that African are unaware that there is inadequate or no health care system in Africa. Many of our doctors, nurses and heath practitioners are leaving to practise and get appreciated in the northern hemisphere. Africa is somewhat a deathtrap by our making and we don’t know it. Many feel it is the demons at play. Perhaps, religion and her agent fears what might happen when people realises many of their problem can’t be shed in it premises.
This is a perfect time to begin to frame how the government would improve and work on the health system but how do you solve a problem you don’t admit to have. Many churches are yet to cancel their Service of worship and still borne a jam-packing congregation which negates social distancing. Also, these churches don’t want to call off their service because this is where their relevance lies -Aside the offering and tithes which makes them the money, it polishes their ego and boost their morale. It is power and isn’t checked by any one.
The truth about the virus will decapitate religion, her drama and sham. Religion thrives where fear and confusion takes over reason but coronavirus has inevitably influenced how the church operate. Many pastors have taken to the internet to hold service of worship, that of course is better than nothing. But the issues lies if the church will provide a cure to this ‘punishment of God’, definitely no.
Every religion awaits scientific breakthrough in medicine before they can go about their own healing. Still wondering how reason erode our perception about life at this crucial point. Now I get it why religion and science might never be no good terms; the former banks on your fear for it relevance and the super notion about God, the latter exposes you to the truth and the universe void of needless fear and calamities.
The problem lies in how we see life in general, as Africans. We are not still aware of our connected we are and how a society works. There are laws and guideline to how the earth and societyworks and interacts – Man has a huge role in making the odds favour him. He needs to put to work and not just call on God. Everything for greatness is either here on earth or within us. There is nothing God can do to make it manifest, it is yours to exploit.
The big question here. is ‘who does God truly use’. That you talk about God always doesn’t mean you know him. I believe no one truly knows God and that he is a manifestation of our realities. Man hasn’t created out of nothing; our marvel, civilization and wonder is a realities of what’s on earth and within us. Then, we can simply say whoever is responsible for what’s on earth and within us as God. So when you begin to interact with what within you and the resources of the earth, fully aware of it potent. Isn’t that God using you? That is what science does, reaches out unto the universe. God is omnipresent and not exclusive to religion.
If COVID-19 doesn’t wake us up to our realities, then we inevitably await further calamity to knock us off our slumber and it might be a higher cost to be at the perils of our ignorance and ineptitude. Revolution starts in the mind, we have been misled politically, misinformed politically, deprived economically and miseducated mentally. Self-educate to emancipation yourself from this bondage. In the age of information, ignorance is a choice. Fix your thinking and the problem will fix itself.
