Burna boy wasn’t just vibing when he said ‘Oluwa Burna mo gbona feli’ (means he’s hot in Yoruba language), he meant it. He has been amazing this year and this isn’t surprising because it is a moment long waited for. Burna boy artistry has been lethal in the music industry since the days of his first single, ‘Like To Party’ took us by storm which was ushered with ‘Tonight’. 2012 unraveled a rare kind of artiste encroaching the Naija mainstream, whose kind of vibe ideally wouldn’t fit. However, Burna boy just has is way with it.
As time flew by, 2018 became a great year for the genre of Afrofusion which dominated the soundwaves courtesy of Burnaboy. He has evolved his artistry and personae, the way he sounded when he started, then the moments he was affiliating more with South Africans and then now, that he has displayed a great influence of Afrobeat.
He has always had the African sound influence from the start, so embracing Afrobeat in particular shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Not after he stripped off, rocking just his panties on stage while performing in Felabration 2013. Though some fans and music veteran faulted the action, it exposes his boldness and love for the Afrobeat legend.
Burna boy has somewhat fitted into the playlist of virtually every listener of music In Nigeria. His artistry is universal, his first single of the year, ‘Heaven’s Gate’ featuring UK artiste, Lily Allen was a good blow.
‘Ye’ is generally acclaimed to be the hottest song of the year and is a reminiscent of Afrobeat. Fela, the founder of Afrobeat has been a great influence on Burna boy who also has been influenced by westernization. Burna boy has found a way combine elements from Afrobeat, Reggae, dancehall and hip-hop to make up Afrofusion which will be adopted by many. Burna boy is attaining a legendary status and 2018 settles the speculation. It is all left to him to keep the work going and keep the studio burning, the world awaits his fire.
He has also had his share of international recognition, seeing how the audience have been singing his songs along on the gram. From his sold-out concert in London which earned him a plaque form the organizers and his billboard on the street of New York at the Times Square as YouTube ‘artiste on the rise’ has made it a great year for Burna boy.
Admist ‘Ye’ which is his ultimate plug into global recognition and mainstream. Tracks such as ‘Rock Your Body’, ‘Calm Down’, ‘Giddim’, ‘Gbona’ and many more has done justice to place Burna boy above every other artiste that has done great this year. The music video of ‘Ye’ is the final cut to this fact. It was a strategic representation of the song, the artiste influence and what he stands for.
And who knows what 2019 might unfold, it won’t be surprising if he polishes his craft better than his colleague again. Only time will tell but 2018 is wrap and Burna boy dominated it. Burna boy is inarguably the artiste of the year 2018.
